How AI Is Fueling Trump's Nuclear Comeback
As AI demands more electricity than ever before, a global Nuclear energy transformation is well underway. On Friday President Trump signed executive orders to accelerate nuclear power plant construction in the US, aiming to boost capacity and meet rising electricity demand. The initiative includes support for small reactors and aims to revive the domestic nuclear industry, despite potential regulatory challenges and concerns over safety and nuclear materials. Once sidelined as too dangerous or expensive, nuclear energy is surging back as a cornerstone of infrastructure— both for climate goals and to power the AI arms race.
Making Nuclear Great Again
Trump’s executive orders mark a dramatic shift in U.S. energy policy. They fast-track nuclear plant construction, including small modular reactors (SMRs), and aim to revive America’s aging nuclear infrastructure. The orders also aim to reclaim US leadership in the field, which has lagged behind China and Russia. The initiative includes plans for new reactors and support for existing plants, promoting nuclear as a clean energy source.
AI Driving Adaptation
The Trump orders prepare for an era of unprecedented electricity demand. And that demand is largely being driven by the explosive growth of AI. LLMs, recommendation engines, and video synthesis tools are electricity-hungry by design. For example, OpenAI’s Stargate planned 5-gigawatt data center with Abu Dhabi’s G42, is larger in physical footprint than the entire (admittedly small) country of Monaco. The facility would consume power equivalent to five nuclear reactors.
A recent report from Texas found that the demand on the power grid from all the new data centers planned in the state, would require the equivalent of 30 nuclear plants’ worth of electricity by 2030 to meet the needs.
Tech’s Atomic Ambitions
The Big AI players are well aware of the potential of nuclear energy. Google, for example, recently signed a deal to develop 1.8 gigawatts of advanced nuclear power to support its future data center fleet. Other tech titans—Amazon, Microsoft, OpenAI—are following suit, pouring capital into next-gen nuclear startups like Kairos Power, Saltfoss, Oklo, and TerraPower. These firms promise safer, smaller, and more cost-effective reactors tailored for local deployment near compute infrastructure.
But, an MIT report pointed out recently that new reactors take years to build. While SMRs are faster than traditional nuclear projects, few will come online before 2030. That’s prompting some companies to eye existing nuclear reactors as an interim solution, even as they plan for a longer-term nuclear future.
Fission Startups On The Rise
Among the wave of nuclear startups, the Sam-Altman-backed Oklo has emerged as a leader, promising to deliver up to 12 GW of carbon-free electricity to Switch by 2044 via microreactors. Meanwhile, The Nuclear Company raised $51.3 million this month to deploy traditional large-scale nuclear plants using pre-approved designs on already-permitted sites. Their goal? Rapid deployment of 6 gigawatts.
However, these plans face headwinds. Solar is cheaper in many regions, and there’s concern that subsidies for nuclear may not keep pace. Still, nuclear’s advantage as a stable, dispatchable energy source gives it unique appeal to hyperscalers who can’t afford a blackout.
Germanys Nuclear Reconciliation
In a surprising pivot, last week Germany dropped its long-held opposition to nuclear power, ending a decades-long rift with France. This move signals a new era of European energy cooperation, as Berlin now supports nuclear being classified alongside renewables under EU law. As Europe attempts to decarbonize, nuclear diplomacy is becoming climate diplomacy.
Fusion Inches Closer to Reality
On the tech side of nuclear, last week the U.S. National Ignition Facility more than doubled its output in a laser-powered fusion test—from 5.2 MJ to 8.6 MJ—though it still consumes more energy than it produces. Across the Pacific, China’s fusion program is also charging ahead with a Sichuan-based laser facility and plans for the world’s first fusion-fission hybrid reactor. While commercial fusion remains decades away, progress is real—and the global race for fusion supremacy is on.
The Lunar Energy Gambit
Meanwhile, China and Russia are planning a nuclear power plant on the Moon, designed to support a manned lunar base by 2035. Their joint station will include solar arrays, pipelines, and nuclear reactors to power lunar research and mining.
U.S. startup Interlune, in partnership with Vermeer, is also taking note: it is building a lunar excavator to mine helium-3, a rare isotope thought to be ideal for fusion energy. Capable of moving 100 metric tons of regolith per hour, the system could lay the groundwork for off-world energy extraction by 2030. A US lunar energy plant is likely to be not too far behind.
A New Energy Order
The Nuclear Energy power-play is about power in the deepest sense. Political, computational, geopolitical, and even extraterrestrial power could depend on this second great nuclear arms race. Nuclear energy is once again at the center of global strategy. As AI redefines the future of energy, the world’s most ambitious players are betting big that nuclear will be the fuel that powers it all.
"With these actions, we are reviving America’s nuclear energy leadership and ensuring a reliable, clean energy future for our country."
